"Well let me tell you something brother......"

Steven and Rachel were never interested in a trip "down south" to tan on a beach , a Mediterranean cruise or historical sight seeing in Europe.  My children, however, were always interested  in doing a "SPORTS VACATION."

So, in 2006 Brenda and I traded in our car, purchased a Kia Sportage and began a twelve day trek towards Baltimore, Maryland.  During those twelve days we attended 8 sporting events. Two pro football games, one soccer game, three baseball games and two wrestling events.  And, we are still "paying" for the trip.

While watching teams such as the Patriots, Eagles, Steelers, Yankees (old Yankees stadium), Cardinals, Mets (old Shea stadium), Orioles (Camden Yard), etc. play, along with attending a live taping of RAW in Bridgeport, Connecticut were exciting, my most memorable event was SUMMERSLAM 2006.

That night, T.D. Banknorth Garden in Boston was packed to the rafters.... I know this because we were sitting on one. The atmosphere was electric.  Rey Mysterio, Big Show, Rick Flair, Mick Foley, Batista, D-Generation X, Edge, John Cena.....all of the "BIG" names were there.

But for me the highlight of the night was watching Hulk Hogan"defeat" Randy Orton. Thousands of Hulka maniacs stood to their feet in a standing ovation as we witnessed Terry Gene Bollea wrestle his last match in the WWF/WWE.

I will never forget my son saying "sit down dad!"  My response: "Steve that is Hulk Hogan!"  He was still not impressed. Why would he be...... the kid had no historical context of what this "athlete" , with little skill, had done for the "sport."

So you may not be a "Hulkamaniac", and believe like I do that wrestling is not fake ....yet let me suggest three things we can learn from Hulk's famous Demandments which can apply to fitness.

1) Train

Sounds simple but millions remain static and stagnant.   That is the starting point!  Begin with something that will work your most important muscle ..... your HEART.

Forget what others look like, how you feel and the confusion created by one too many programs...... Stop saying it will be another day when you are not tired and the kids are not cranky. Stop the talk and begin the fitness walk. It can be a memorable and productive journey.

2)  Say your prayers

Now, don't stop reading....I have not lost my mind and I am not going to ask you to go out and purchase Jimmy Swaggert's latest CD or E-book on GETTING A SIX PACK in 56 DAYS THROUGH PIANO PLAYING.

I do believe , however, that the word "prayer" can have a fitness context.  To me it  is a daily reflection on my life and relationships.  It helps me realign my goals and inner self.  While that may sound spooky ,I challenge you to take time each day to refocus the energy in your body.   Take time to destress yourself.  Take time to set goals...Take time to be "Yourself."... Take time to give and forgive.

Now that may not sound "manly" to some  but trust me I bear the scars in damaged relationships resulting from a passion to train at the expense of not reflecting on  its impact on others.  There must be a balance.... I trust you will find it!

3)  Eat your vitamins

It is well documented that Hogan took some "strong vitamins."   I am always amazed when a young fellow tries to convince me that  tribulus terrestris  or D-Spartic Acid is causing his MASSIVE gains....  And when they say it with a straight face it is even more amusing.

Let me be clear, I am not against legal supplements and would have a much lower mortgage today if I did not take them.  Currently, companies like Advanced Genetics are producing cutting edge products such as Nitric Impact, GP3,  Glycophase , Isophase, etc. Check the products out at http://advancedgenetics.ca/  These products can assist the hard training athlete and the weekend warrior.  Yet, they can only "supplement" a diet that is filled with the appropriate macronutrients.

So until next time "train, say your prayers and eat  your vitamins".....it will not turn you in to a hulkamaniac but will move you closer to your fitness goals.
